Beverley actress Eleanor Tomlinson and actor Aidan Turner have opened up about their “very real” on-screen relationship, ahead of the third Poldark series.

Set against the backdrop of a wild Cornish landscape and even wilder romances, millions of fans are hooked on the 18th century bodice-ripping melodrama.

As the saga gallops back to the BBC’s screens in June, the relationship between dashing Ross Poldark (Turner) and his fiery wife Demelza (Tomlinson) is feeling the strain.

After a rocky ending to the last series, when Poldark strayed with former lover Elizabeth (Heida Reed), the question on every fan’s lips will be whose baby is Elizabeth carrying?

Turner, whose swashbuckling character is a familiar figure galloping on horseback along the windswept Cornish cliffs, said: “We pick up this series with Ross mending his relationship with Demelza.

“There is obviously a lot of tension still in the air but it seems like they have talked it through so Ross is licking his wounds a little bit and trying to get his relationship back on track again.

“They have their own family to think of now and want to get on with life while hoping for an easier one.”

Turner admits he enjoys playing opposite former Beverley High School girl Eleanor. He said: “The relationship between Ross and Demelza has always felt very real for Eleanor and I, that’s why it is so enjoyable to play.

“We can really track the progress of their relationship and when we go to shoot a scene and we do our research on what has come before, it is easy to join the dots and to see where they are at and why.

“Eleanor and myself have worked together for so long now that we are very familiar with each other and our relationship progresses alongside the relationship between our characters.

“When we are doing these scenes you’re just looking into that person’s eyes and you are relating to them on that platform and in that context and it feels like any relationship would feel, it is very real for us.”

Eleanor says Ross and Demelza have a realistic relationship and that is what people like about them.

“It has never been a fairytale romance. They have a lot of arguments and problems in their marriage but they have two children and so they question what they should do, whether they should stick it out or separate?

“It is interesting to see how they handle everything from living together to having children and how the threat of other people to a relationship is very genuine.

“It is not solely a modern issue, it is very real and has been going on for generations

“The series has such resonance as it makes you realise that the things we deal with today were ever thus.

“The reality of playing a woman who is in a marriage which isn’t all roses but is complicated and nuanced has been really interesting.”

Eleanor relishes playing one of the feistiest characters in period drama.

She says: “Demelza is such an independent female character who makes her own decisions and cuts out her own path and that is what myself and our audience love about her, that she is a strong and somewhat modern woman for a period drama.

“It’s so rare to come across a character who grows so much, to start off as an urchin mistaken for a boy and to end as the wife of Ross Poldark and Lady of the house is an extraordinary journey to take the character on and it’s been brilliant.”

Eleanor, who turned heads in a revealing dress at the recent BAFTA awards, says playing such a strong character has made her a more confident person.

“Demelza has taught me a lot about myself and playing her has made me a more confident person.

“The more I learn about her and the way she handles situations, the more I admire her.

“I have taken a lot of her on board in my personal life, as I believe she is a great role model for women.

“She is very true to her own beliefs and she has no airs and graces and that’s what I love about her.

“Demelza is no shrinking violet, she is a strong powerful woman and I enjoy playing a female role that is so liberated. I am all team Demelza.”
